Accelink, one of China's largest optical module makers, more than doubled its inventory to RMB12.11 billion in nine months while third-quarter revenue rose 54%, which tells us the optical link in AI networks is short enough that both the module maker and its customers are now paying up front to hold a place in the queue.

## What happened?

- **The quarter:** Wuhan Accelink Technologies, listed in Shenzhen, published its third-quarter report on the evening of 25 October 2026\. Revenue was RMB5.07 billion, up 54.27% from a year earlier. Net profit attributable to shareholders was RMB702 million, up 102.62%, and profit excluding one-off items was RMB704 million, up 121.06%.
- **The stockpile:** Inventory stood at RMB12.11 billion on 30 September, up 110.76% from RMB5.75 billion at the end of 2025\. Accelink's own explanation is one line: it increased its stock reserves.
- **The cash:** Operating cash flow for the nine months was an outflow of RMB1.88 billion, against an inflow of RMB1.08 billion a year earlier. The company says this is mainly because more cash went out to buy goods.
- **Why it says it is growing:** In its 16 October profit forecast, Accelink put the gain down to the wave of global AI computing capex lifting demand for data centre optical modules, plus Chinese cloud providers spending more on data centres. In a 23 October statement on operations, it said demand for its high-speed optical interconnect products is strong and its order backlog is ample.

## Why does it matter?

**The direct signal.** Optical modules turn electrical signals from GPUs and switches into light so they can travel between racks and buildings. Every large AI cluster needs thousands of them, and the jump to 800G and 1.6T speeds needs more and faster lasers per module. A 54% rise in quarterly sales at a company this size says that demand is still running hot in China as well as abroad. Our arithmetic: third-quarter profit of RMB702 million was more than the RMB582 million Accelink earned in the whole first half.

**The second-order signal: the queue moved upstream, and everyone is prepaying.** The balance sheet shows a company buying ahead of its sales on both ends of the chain:

- Our arithmetic: inventory is now about 1.4 times the RMB8.70 billion cost of everything Accelink sold in the first nine months. That is a large stock for a business turning over goods at this pace.
- Prepayments to suppliers rose to RMB976 million from RMB106 million, up 818.72%, which the filing calls mainly purchase prepayments. Prepaid equipment, booked under other non-current assets, rose to RMB590 million from RMB64 million.
- Customers are doing the same to Accelink. Contract liabilities, meaning money customers paid before delivery, rose 200.29% to RMB1.29 billion from RMB431 million.
- Our arithmetic: cash paid for goods and services rose 48.5% to RMB13.29 billion, while cash received from sales rose only 11.2% to RMB12.39 billion. The gap of about RMB0.90 billion is the stockpile showing up in cash.

When a module maker pays suppliers in advance and its customers pay it in advance, the scarce item sits further up the chain: laser chips, optical components and the tools that make them. The suppliers further up get paid first.

**Who carries the gap.** Accelink did not borrow to do this. Bank debt is small: short-term loans of RMB10 million and long-term loans of RMB69 million. Instead it raised equity. Cash received from investors in the nine months was RMB3.50 billion, and capital reserve rose 77.53%, which the filing says came mainly from raised funds. Suppliers carried the rest: accounts payable rose 155.58% to RMB5.85 billion and notes payable rose to RMB2.38 billion from RMB1.83 billion.

**Margins held while it built stock.** Our arithmetic from the income statement: nine-month gross margin was about 25.5%, against about 23.1% a year earlier. Asset impairment charges rose to RMB314 million from RMB237 million, a reminder that a stockpile can lose value if prices or product generations move.

## What does it change?

**Near term (to the end of 2026)**

- **Component makers' order books fill first.** Laser chip and optical component suppliers are being paid before the modules ship. The Chinese laser chip maker Yuanjie said on 23 October that equipment for its second-phase plant starts arriving soon, with new capacity from the end of 2026 to early 2027.
- **Working capital, not factories, is the main use of cash.** Our arithmetic: the RMB6.36 billion rise in inventory is more than five times the RMB1.17 billion Accelink paid for plant and equipment in nine months, although that capex figure itself was 2.05 times last year's.
- **The fourth quarter is the test of the stockpile.** If the inventory is mostly parts for confirmed orders, revenue should keep climbing and inventory should start turning into sales. If inventory keeps rising faster than revenue, the stock is ahead of demand.

**Longer term (2027 and beyond)**

- **Prepayment becomes the norm.** The pattern here matches what larger peers say. Zhongji Innolight said on 23 October that major overseas customers have placed orders into 2027 and some have given clear demand guidance for 2028, and that it is signing long-term supply agreements with core suppliers. Accelink's balance sheet is what that looks like in numbers.
- **Construction is starting.** Construction in progress rose 315.65% to RMB331 million, which the filing ties to its industrial park.
- **What we cannot see yet:** how much of the RMB12.11 billion is raw materials and chips versus finished modules waiting for customer acceptance, which customers the prepayments came from, and how much is for domestic versus overseas AI clusters. The quarterly report does not break inventory down; the annual report will.

## What should we watch next?

- **Amkor's third-quarter results on 26 October, after the US close.** Not optics, but the nearest read on whether back-end AI demand is broad. It is already on our [Catalyst calendar](https://www.sotkn.com/catalyst/calendar/).
- **Zhongji Innolight and Eoptolink third-quarter reports, both scheduled for 30 October.** The two largest Chinese module makers will show whether the inventory build and prepayments are industry-wide or specific to Accelink.
- **Yuanjie's third-quarter report, scheduled for 31 October.** The laser chip maker sits one step up the chain. Its guided revenue of RMB650 million to RMB700 million would confirm whether the cash Accelink and its peers are prepaying is landing at the chip step.
- **What would weaken the catalyst:** inventory rising faster than revenue again in the fourth quarter, larger impairment charges, contract liabilities falling as customers stop prepaying, or peers reporting stock build without matching sales.

Also on the tape

- **26 Oct:** TrendForce said lead times for the ABF substrates used under AI chips are 48 to 56 weeks, against about 12 weeks in a balanced market (TrendForce).
- **25 Oct:** Demingli, a Chinese memory storage maker, reported third-quarter revenue of RMB11.64 billion, up 356.64%, and a nine-month operating cash outflow of RMB13.69 billion (Demingli).
- **23 Oct:** Yuanjie said it expects third-quarter revenue of RMB650 million to RMB700 million, up 264.56% to 292.60%, mainly on data centre lasers (Yuanjie Semiconductor).
- **23 Oct:** Zhongji Innolight said major overseas customers have placed orders into 2027 and some key customers have given clear demand guidance for 2028 (Zhongji Innolight).

## FAQ

**What does Accelink do?**
Accelink designs and makes optical chips, components and modules for telecom networks and data centres. It is controlled by China Information and Communication Technologies Group, a state-owned telecom equipment group based in Wuhan.

**Why would a company double its inventory?**
Either to lock in parts that are hard to get, or because finished goods are waiting for customers to accept them, or both. Accelink says only that it raised its stock reserves. The ninefold rise in supplier prepayments points to the first reason playing a large part.

**Is negative operating cash flow a warning sign?**
It means cash is tied up in stock and receivables rather than lost. Accelink is profitable and funded the gap with RMB3.50 billion of new equity, not bank loans. It becomes a problem only if the stock is not sold at a profit; that is what the next two quarters will show.

**How do optical modules fit into AI data centres?**
They carry data between GPUs, switches and racks as light, which is faster and uses less power over distance than copper. Our [silicon photonics explainer](https://www.sotkn.com/explained/silicon-photonics-explained/) covers why the laser is the hardest part to supply.

**Takeaway:** Accelink's quarter shows the AI optics queue has moved up to parts and lasers, and the cash to hold a place in it is being paid before the modules ship, by the module maker and by its customers.
