*China’s markets came back from the National Day holiday on 8 Oct 2026 and sold the foundry first. The fight is not yesterday’s utilization print. It is SMIC’s third-quarter gross-margin guide of 26 to 28 percent — the first hard price tag on Huawei’s wafer-hungry LogicFolding design after the Mate 90 launch. SMIC gets paid on wafer invoices. The stuck step is still DUV capacity and qualification, not the guide itself.*

**In short:** SMIC guided third-quarter 2026 gross margin to 26–28% and revenue up 2–4% on the quarter, in its HKEX filing of 13 Aug 2026\. That sits above the 25.3% margin and $3.01 billion revenue it printed in the second quarter at 93.7% utilization. On 1 Oct Huawei launched the Mate 90 with a Kirin 9050 Pro that uses LogicFolding — a stacked design that needs more wafers. Independent die-shot reports put the stack on SMIC nodes. Map of who gets paid — not a buy list.

## Why does SMIC’s margin guide matter for China now?

Because SMIC is the largest pure-play foundry inside China, and Huawei’s newest phone and AI chips draw on the same scarce advanced capacity. When a design uses more wafers per unit, the foundry’s pricing power shows up in the margin guide before it shows up as leading-edge cash.

If you are new to the China foundry clock, start with [the 4 Oct SMIC utilization Pulse](https://www.sotkn.com/markets/china/china-smic-utilization-october-2026/) for the second-quarter print, and [semiconductors, explained](https://www.sotkn.com/explained/semiconductors-explained/). The question here is not “is SMIC busy?” At 93.7% utilization it already was. The question is what a 26–28% margin guide prices — and what it still cannot buy.

**Who:** Mate 90 / Kirin 9050 Pro / Ascend pool

SMIC gross margin, percent. Q3 is company guidance. · Education only.

Two lines in the 13 Aug 2026 HKEX filing: revenue up 2% to 4% on the second quarter, and gross margin between 26% and 28%. That is the whole guide.

Put it next to what SMIC just printed. Second-quarter revenue was $3,005.6 million, up 20.0% on the first quarter and 36.1% on a year. Gross profit was $760.6 million. Gross margin was 25.3%, up 5.2 points on the first quarter. Profit attributable to owners was $479.2 million. Utilization was 93.7%. Wafer shipments rose 14.4%. China was 90.2% of revenue. Wafers were 94.6% of service mix.

So the third-quarter ask is not another 20% jump in sales. It is a thinner revenue step and a fatter margin. That is what a price-and-mix story looks like on a foundry that is already nearly full.

## What does LogicFolding change on the wafer clock?

On 1 Oct 2026 Huawei launched the Mate 90 series with a Kirin 9050 Pro built on its LogicFolding method. The company describes a three-dimensional rewrite of chip wiring. In plain English: the phone chip is stacked, and a stacked chip uses more silicon for the same finished handset.

Huawei did not name the foundry in the launch. Independent die-shot coverage of a Mate 90 Pro Max teardown — reported by Geekerwan and carried by Notebookcheck, Wccftech and others — says the Kirin 9050 Pro is a two-die stack: a logic die on SMIC’s N+3 process bonded face-to-face with a cache and input-output die on SMIC’s N+2, joined by hybrid bonding at about a 1.5-micron pitch. Treat that as teardown attribution, not a joint company confirmation.

Huawei’s consumer chief, Richard Yu, said advanced semiconductor capacity “remains very limited in China” and that Huawei’s Ascend AI chips “draw on that same” constrained supply. Phone silicon and AI silicon compete for the same scarce domestic foundry pool. That is the second-order read: a wafer-hungry phone launch tightens the same step Ascend already sits on.

On 5 Oct Huawei and Qualcomm announced a multi-year broad patent license covering 5G, compute, AI and networking, plus Qualcomm’s purchase of certain Huawei U.S. patents. That is the official text. Do not read it as a confirmed LogicFolding-specific license — Qualcomm pushed back on that framing. For this Pulse it is only a side clock: IP is moving even while foundry capacity stays tight. See [HBM, explained](https://www.sotkn.com/explained/hbm-explained/) for the memory side of the same China constraint, and [China HBM access](https://www.sotkn.com/markets/china/china-hbm-access-september-2026/) for the September read.

## Our math: what does 26–28% price?

![Chart of Second Order arithmetic on SMIC Q3 gross-profit band versus Q2 print](https://storage.ghost.io/c/cd/10/cd10e222-131f-4ba4-b4a9-ca4214e8c12d/content/images/2026/10/china-smic-margin-logicfolding-october-2026-shift.png)

Our arithmetic from the Q3 guidance band. · Education only.

- Start from Q2 revenue of $3,005.6 million. Mid guidance (+3% QoQ) is about $3,095.8 million. The full band is about $3,065.7–$3,125.8 million.
- At the midpoint margin of 27%, gross profit would be about $835.9 million — roughly $75 million more than the $760.6 million SMIC printed in Q2 (our arithmetic).
- At the low end (26% on +2% sales) gross profit is about $797 million. At the high end (28% on +4% sales) it is about $875 million.
- Of each $100 of guided mid-quarter sales, about $27 would be left as gross profit, against $25.30 in Q2 (our arithmetic).

What this tells you: the guide asks for more cents per dollar of sales while adding only a thin slice of volume. That is consistent with higher wafer prices and a richer mix on a line that is already 93.7% full.

What it does not tell you: that depreciation has stopped rising, that new capacity has finished qualifying, or that SMIC can sell leading-edge EUV wafers. Depreciation and amortisation were already $1,211.7 million in the second quarter, up 11.4% on the first. Capex was $1,835.7 million. A fatter margin guide can still sit next to a heavier depreciation load. See [cash capex, explained](https://www.sotkn.com/explained/cash-capex-explained/) for how to read that spending.

## Who gets paid first?

![Infographic: who gets paid when Huawei LogicFolding needs more SMIC wafers](https://storage.ghost.io/c/cd/10/cd10e222-131f-4ba4-b4a9-ca4214e8c12d/content/images/2026/10/china-smic-margin-logicfolding-october-2026-infographic.png)

Who gets paid / stuck step on China’s foundry clock. · Education only.

Follow one LogicFolding wafer order. The money moves in a short line, and each stop has its own clock.

First, SMIC. The foundry invoices wafers. When utilization is high and a design needs more wafers per phone, average selling price and mix do the work. That is who the 26–28% guide pays first. See [the semiconductors stack](https://www.sotkn.com/stack/semiconductors/) for where foundries sit on the map.

Second, Huawei and the phone buyer. A stacked Kirin design raises the silicon bill inside the handset. Press colour around the Mate 90 Pro Max launch put the top model near 9,999 yuan — treat that as launch colour, not an SMIC filing. The point is direction: more wafers per unit raise the customer’s cost even before Ascend AI chips compete for the same lines.

Third, tool makers and cleanroom builders get paid on the expansion — but only after tools are ordered and space qualifies. That cash is slower. It is the same pattern we mapped on [Samsung’s Korea profit Pulse](https://www.sotkn.com/markets/korea/korea-samsung-q3-profit-october-2026/): the seller of scarce chips is paid first; new space sets the pace later.

One-line rule: who gets paid is SMIC on wafer invoices; the stuck step is DUV capacity and qualification, not the margin band itself.

## Is DUV capacity still stuck?

Yes — as a map of clocks, not as a slogan. Utilization was 93.7% in the second quarter. Monthly capacity rose only to 1,096,500 eight-inch-equivalent wafers from 1,078,250\. Management said it would flexibly allocate existing capacity and accelerate qualification of newly added capacity to ease supply constraints. That sentence is the stuck step in SMIC’s own words.

Management noteAccelerate qualification of newly added capacity

What a higher GM does not buyEUV parity · leading-edge export clearance · finished qualification

Two cautions. First: a margin guide can rise while the stuck step stays stuck — that is the whole point of this Pulse. Second: teardown attribution is not a purchase order. Huawei has not published a foundry name for Kirin 9050 Pro; SMIC has not claimed the die in a filing. On the reopen session, secondary reports put SMIC’s Shanghai close down about 4.4% with a broader semiconductor selloff and multi-day Stock Connect outflows. That is market colour, not the thesis. The thesis is the guide versus the wafer clock. The Q3 print decides whether 26–28% is a rung or a peak.

## Policy and export rules (so-what)

- Advanced-tool export controls still keep SMIC off leading-edge EUV. A higher DUV margin is not a substitute for that step.
- Domestic phone and Ascend AI demand share the same constrained advanced capacity inside China.
- A broad Huawei–Qualcomm patent deal (5 Oct) moves IP clocks; it does not clear foundry capacity.

So-what: policy keeps the stuck step on domestic DUV capacity and qualification. Pricing power inside that pool can still rise. Those are different clocks.

## How this differs from prior China Pulses

- 4 Oct SMIC utilization — led on 93.7% full / $3.0B print / qualification. Cross-link; do not re-lead.
- 7 Oct Alibaba 20 GW — power and campus ask, not foundry margins.
- HBM access (Sep) — memory for domestic accelerators, not LogicFolding wafer intensity.
- Power–computing / data-services power — grid and power clocks, not SMIC’s GM band.
- Electronics profits (2 Oct) — NBS electronics P&L, not a foundry guide.

Same country door. Different stuck step. For the US power clock from yesterday afternoon, see [Texas $50,000/MW large-load Pulse](https://www.sotkn.com/markets/us/us-texas-large-load-rule-october-2026/).

## What would change this view?

- Q3 gross margin prints below 26% while utilization stays high — the price-tag read weakens.
- Q3 gross margin clears 28% with rising shipments — the band was a floor, not a peak.
- Huawei or SMIC publish a clear foundry attribution for Kirin 9050 Pro — teardown risk falls.
- New capacity finishes qualification fast enough that utilization eases without ASP cuts.
- Export rules change and leading-edge tools land — the stuck step moves off DUV intensity.
- Phone and Ascend demand both cool together — wafer scarcity softens.

The view stays intact while SMIC stays near full, the margin guide holds as a price-and-mix story, and new advanced capacity still has to qualify.

## Practical takeaways

- SMIC guided Q3 2026 gross margin to 26–28% on only +2–4% more sales (HKEX, 13 Aug 2026)
- Our midpoint arithmetic: about $836M of gross profit vs $760.6M in Q2
- Mate 90 / Kirin 9050 Pro LogicFolding (1 Oct) is a wafer-hungry design; die-shot reports put the stack on SMIC nodes
- Who gets paid first: SMIC on wafer invoices; phone and Ascend buyers carry wafer intensity
- Stuck step: DUV capacity and qualification — 93.7% full ≠ leading-edge cash

## FAQ

**What is SMIC’s Q3 2026 gross-margin guide?**
In its HKEX filing dated 13 Aug 2026, SMIC said third-quarter revenue should rise 2% to 4% sequentially and gross margin should land between 26% and 28%. That sits above the 25.3% gross margin it printed in the second quarter. Guidance is not a closed cash print.

**Who gets paid on this China read?**
SMIC gets paid on wafer invoices — volume, average selling price, and product mix at the nodes it can run. China was 90.2% of second-quarter revenue. A higher margin guide is the price tag on scarce domestic foundry capacity, not a buy list.

**What is LogicFolding and why does it matter for wafers?**
Huawei’s Mate 90 series, launched 1 Oct 2026, uses a Kirin 9050 Pro built with its LogicFolding method: a stacked chip design that uses more silicon area and more wafers per phone. Independent die-shot reports say the stack sits on SMIC process nodes. More wafers per unit raise the bill for the customer and the load on the foundry.

**What is the stuck step?**
DUV capacity and new-capacity qualification. Utilization was already 93.7% in the second quarter. A 26–28% margin guide is not EUV parity, not cleared leading-edge cash, and not proof that newly added capacity has finished qualifying. Ready is not paid.

**How is this different from the 4 Oct SMIC utilization Pulse?**
That Pulse led on the second-quarter print: $3.0B revenue, 93.7% utilization, and who gets paid on wafer invoices while capacity still qualifies. This Pulse leads on the margin guide as the first hard price tag on a wafer-hungry LogicFolding design after Mate 90 and the 8 Oct reopen. Cross-link that clock; do not re-lead it.

**Is this investment advice?**
No. Education only. It maps who gets paid and which step is stuck. It is not a recommendation to buy or sell any security.
