Nscale's Arctic data center runs six months late ahead of $35B IPO

Nscale's flagship Glomfjord data center in Norway is six months behind schedule with 6.4 MW of 30 MW running, Bloomberg reported on 16 October. Its IPO filing counts $103.4 billion of contracts, $2.6 billion active, and no committed financing yet for Anthropic's Monarch build.

WIRE · NEOCLOUDS · GLOBAL · Data as at 17 Oct 2026

Nscale, the British neocloud preparing a New York listing that has been reported at up to $35 billion, is running late at its own flagship. Bloomberg reported on 16 October 2026 that the Glomfjord data center in Arctic Norway is six months behind schedule, with 6.4 MW of a planned 30 MW running, after cooling leaks, a transformer fire, local rules and construction setbacks. The company's prospectus counts $103.4 billion of signed contracts, but only $2.6 billion of that is active. On the neoclouds layer, that gap is what the IPO is selling: contracts that pay only once the halls are delivered on time.

What happened

16 October 2026 · Bloomberg

Glomfjord is six months late, with 6.4 MW of 30 MW running

Repeated cooling leaks, a December fire, ten safety violations found and later closed, and a floating hotel towed in to house more workers. The site serves ByteDance. Bloomberg also reported millions of dollars of delay penalties owed on paper to Microsoft at Sines, Portugal

16 October 2026 · The other side

A source told DCD the fire caused no delay and no fines were imposed

The source agreed the project is late overall, said the customer was told, and said the leak was fixed within weeks. Bloomberg reported customers were offered better terms on new contracts instead of cash penalties

18 September 2026 · Form S-1

$103.4 billion signed, $2.6 billion active, two customers on top

Microsoft statements of work worth up to $43.8 billion through December 2033. Anthropic agreements worth up to $44.6 billion at the Monarch campus in West Virginia, signed 25 August

The condition

A late tranche can be cancelled without liability

The filing says Anthropic may end any tranche delivered past its window, and that Nscale had no binding commitments for any of the financing the Monarch build needs

Why cash cares

A neocloud's contract is only as good as its delivery date. Nscale's two big customers make up most of the book. Our arithmetic, not a company figure: Microsoft's $43.8 billion and Anthropic's $44.6 billion together are about 85% of the $103.4 billion. What is already running, $2.6 billion, is about 2.5% of it. The rest turns into revenue only as halls are built, powered, filled with chips and accepted by the customer.

Glomfjord is small. At 30 MW it is a rounding error next to Monarch, where Nscale plans its first 2 GW of gross power by the first half of 2028. But it is the site billed as Nscale's flagship, and it is a refit of an existing hall rather than a new build. If 30 MW on Norwegian hydro power slips six months, the market has to ask what a 2 GW build on new on-site power does.

The money already looks stretched. In the first half of 2026 Nscale booked $140.6 million of revenue and a $1.02 billion net loss, a loss about seven times revenue (our arithmetic). It had $1.5 billion of cash at 30 June. Since then it has raised $3.36 billion in convertible notes led by Third Point, including $1 billion from Nvidia due to close around 16 November, and the notes turn into shares when the IPO completes.

Nscale's contract book: $103.4B signed against $2.6B active, Microsoft and Anthropic bars, Glomfjord at 6.4 of 30 MW, and the dates to the IPO and Monarch

The second-order read

Who gets paid. Nvidia first: it sells the Vera Rubin systems both big contracts depend on, more than 66,000 of them for Microsoft at Sines alone, and it is also putting $1 billion into Nscale. The Third Point-led noteholders, who convert at the IPO. Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan and Morgan Stanley, the lead bookrunners. Then the builders and power suppliers at Monarch, not yet named.

Who carries the risk. Nscale and the shareholders it is about to take on. Penalties for late delivery come out of its cash, and on the Anthropic contract the customer can walk away from a late tranche. Microsoft and Anthropic, on paper, carry little: they pay for capacity only once it is delivered.

Who waits. Anthropic, whose Monarch capacity needs financing that is not yet committed. Microsoft, for its Vera Rubin build at Sines from late 2027. ByteDance, for the rest of Glomfjord.

Stuck step. Financing for Monarch. The S-1 says Nscale must use best efforts to raise it within a set period after the Anthropic deal, and that none of it was committed as of 18 September. The IPO, the Nvidia money and project debt all have to land before the halls can.

Two cautions

The Bloomberg account is disputed in part. A source close to the project told DCD that the fire caused no delay and that no fines were imposed at Glomfjord, while agreeing the project is late. Bloomberg reported that customers there were offered better terms on new contracts rather than paid in cash. Either way, the cost of lateness shows up somewhere, in cash or in future pricing.

Total contract value counts the full committed term at signing. It is not backlog in the accounting sense, and Nscale's filing says contract terms begin only once each GPU cluster is delivered. The $35 billion valuation and $3 billion raise are press reports; the filing still has no price range.

What would change the view

  • An S-1 amendment with a price range and an update on Monarch financing, which would show whether the gap has closed.
  • Binding project debt or GPU financing for Monarch, named and sized.
  • Glomfjord reaching 30 MW, or Microsoft accepting the next Sines tranche on time.

What to watch

  • The Nvidia note closing on or around 16 November, 30 days from today (our arithmetic).
  • Any delay notices or reworked terms in an amended filing, especially on the Anthropic tranches.
  • CoreWeave and Lambda's financing, the same test for the rest of the neocloud layer.
