What Does TSMC's Price Assume About the CoWoS Stuck Step?

TSMC closed at $424.37, about $1.90 trillion. It already recognised $46.72 billion of third-quarter sales. What does the price assume about getting paid on the wafer while the package still binds?

TSMC's ADR closed at $424.37 on 26 October. StockAnalysis prints about $1.90 trillion for the shares. Twelve days earlier the foundry recognised US$46.72 billion of third-quarter sales — a wafer invoice, above its own guide — while C.C. Wei still called the back end "a little bit" short. This morning's Wire is an unconfirmed CoWoS price tag of 10% to 20%. What is the price already assuming about getting paid on the wafer while the package still binds?

In short

  • The question: what is TSMC's price already assuming about the CoWoS stuck step — leading-edge wafers and HPC mix already billed, 2-nanometer already 8% of wafer revenue, while advanced packaging is still a little short and a newspaper price rise has not been confirmed?
  • The answer: Scenario B. $424.37 is 28.3 times trailing ADR earnings and 19.9 times forward earnings (ours). The price is paying for the wafer invoice to keep printing, not for a named CoWoS volume print that catches demand
  • Why: Q3 printed US$46.72 billion, 2.01% above the US$45.8 billion high end of guide (ours). Gross margin 66.4%. HPC 68% of sales. Q4 guided US$52.3–54.3 billion. Wei, 15 October: CoWoS is still customers' first choice; 5× reticle is in production; the back end is still a little short. TSMC has not confirmed this morning's 10–20% figure
  • The size of the gap: Q4's midpoint is 14.1% above Q3 (ours). Forward 19.9 times needs about $21.37 of ADR EPS, 43% above $14.97 (ours). That step is a claim on wafers that still bill around a short package, not on a slot unlocking
  • What would break it: October monthly sales well below the Q4 run-rate, or a confirmed CoWoS catch-up with open slots for late buyers (A); or a named packaging-volume print plus a confirmed price that converts as dollars (C)
  • Nothing here is a recommendation. This is a map of what the price requires, with the working shown

Why does TSMC sit at the CoWoS stuck step?

TSMC sells wafers, then the advanced packages that join those wafers to HBM. It is paid when a wafer is recognised — not when a hall goes live. CoWoS, explained is the free map of that join. Almost every large AI accelerator still passes through it, and TSMC still does most of it.

This morning's Wire is a newspaper price on that join — Commercial Times, 10% to 20%, unconfirmed. The arithmetic below does not treat it as a company number. The 15 October call already named the stuck step: Wei said CoWoS is still customers' first choice, 5× reticle is in real production, 9× and 14× are in work, and the back end is still a little short, which is why GlobalFoundries is on interposers. Demand, after TSMC's own US hall-and-power check, is still "far above" what it can supply.

The 21 October Taiwan Pulse was that wafer book against that shortage. Today is the company next to that bay: $1.90 trillion, paid on the wafer, waiting on the package. This morning's factory Pulse is the server mix after the package (manufacturing 143.31, missed 146.03–150.03). This afternoon's Together AI Stack is a buyer with $1.15 billion of bookings and halls that still wait. None of those is a TSMC price.

This is not ASE's 24 September OSAT question, not the 23 September CoWoS-L map, and not yesterday's licence-before-the-bill map. Do not read US$46.72 billion as a shipped accelerator.

What does ~$1.90 trillion already assume?

Three answers compete:

  1. The wafer slips with the package. October monthly sales break the Q4 run-rate. HPC mix rolls from 68%. 2-nanometer stalls as a mix line. The unconfirmed 10–20% is denied and slots open. The forward earnings step does not arrive
  2. Wafers keep billing around a short CoWoS. Q4 prints around US$52.3–54.3 billion. HPC holds. 2-nanometer stays a real mix line. Wei's shortage words still hold. The newspaper rise, confirmed or not, is a scarcity receipt, not a volume unlock. TSMC is still paid on the wafer. The package still binds
  3. The package catches, and the price converts as a beat. A named CoWoS or back-end volume print that shows supply catching the demand Wei still called far above. Lead times fall for buyers outside the top tier. 9× and 14× show as dollars, not as a sentence. A confirmed packaging price that lands with open slots

A tip sheet would pick a side. Analysis asks which answer today's price already needs.

Our read, in one line: the price already assumes Scenario B. About $1.90 trillion sits at 28.3 times trailing ADR earnings (ours). The forward multiple of 19.86 times needs about $21.37 of EPS, 43% above $14.97 (ours). That is a claim on wafers that still bill — not on a CoWoS slot opening. The package is what binds the die. The invoice is what binds the price. The scenarios and the arithmetic are below.
