AMD plans substantial 2027 chip supply jump as MI455 ships

Lisa Su (6-7 Oct): AMD will make substantially more chips in 2027 and plans supply 3-5 years out. Each MI455X carries 432 GB of HBM4, about 31 TB per Helios rack, so Samsung and SK hynix set the pace.

AMD says it will make substantially more AI chips in 2027. Chief executive Lisa Su said so in Taipei on 6 October, then flew to Seoul on 7 October to meet the two companies that make the memory those chips need. On the semiconductors layer, the order book is not the hard part. The hard part is getting enough wafers, packaging and, above all, high-bandwidth memory (HBM) built in time.

What happened

On 6 October 2026, Su told reporters in Taipei: "We plan to increase supply substantially in 2027, but clearly more will be needed." She met TSMC and Foxconn on the same trip.

On 7 October 2026, in Seoul, she met SK hynix chief executive Kwak Noh-jung and Samsung chip head Jun Young-hyun. She said AMD has begun shipping its new MI455 accelerators and Helios rack systems with HBM4 memory from both companies.

Why cash cares

AMD does not own factories. It designs the chips and pays others to make them. So every extra chip AMD wants to sell in 2027 is a purchase order to someone else first.

The first order goes to TSMC for wafers. Taiwan's Economic Daily News, as cited by TrendForce on 6 October, says AMD's new MI450-series chips are made on TSMC's 2nm process and joined to their memory with TSMC's CoWoS packaging. Su said CoWoS demand is rising with AI chip demand, and AMD is also looking at panel-level packaging with Taiwanese firms.

The second order goes to memory. Each MI455X carries 432 GB of HBM4. A Helios rack holds 72 of them. That is our own arithmetic, not a disclosed figure: 72 × 432 GB is about 31 TB of HBM4 in one rack. Every extra rack AMD ships in 2027 needs that much memory made, stacked and tested first.

And memory is the tight part. In Seoul, Su said AMD is "working with our customers to optimise their memory footprint so that we can satisfy more computing going forward." She said she encourages memory makers to "build faster, as fast as possible." That is a chip buyer saying the queue is at the memory makers.

Memory bind: more AMD chips need more HBM4 first

Figure — Memory bind. TSMC wafers and CoWoS packaging → HBM4 from Samsung and SK hynix, 432 GB per chip and about 31 TB per rack (stuck step) → Helios racks ship and customers pay.

Who sets the pace

AMD can plan more chips. It cannot make more memory. Samsung and SK hynix decide how fast HBM4 output grows, and they sell the same memory to Nvidia and others.

That is why Su's planning horizon moved to three to five years. A memory line or a packaging line takes years to build. A buyer who wants more in 2027 and 2028 has to commit now. Su said AMD sees its HBM ties with both companies as lasting "multiple generations."

Su was also asked whether Samsung would make AMD chips, not just memory. She did not confirm it. "Samsung is a great partner in many areas, and we continue to explore opportunities with them," she said. Talk is not a contract.

The second-order read

Who gets paid. TSMC, for 2nm wafers and CoWoS packaging. Samsung and SK hynix, for the HBM4 on every chip. Then the rack builders: TrendForce names Foxconn as a major AMD AI server supplier.

Who pays. AMD first, for wafers, packaging and memory. Then its rack customers, once Helios systems ship. Seoul Economic Daily names OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, Meta and Oracle as lined-up Helios customers.

Who waits. AMD's 2027 sales. Su's own words are that demand exceeds supply, so the extra revenue arrives only as fast as parts arrive.

Stuck step. HBM4 output at Samsung and SK hynix, with advanced wafers and CoWoS close behind. Until the memory exists, the extra racks do not ship.

Two cautions

AMD gave no number for its 2027 supply. "Substantially" is a direction, not a forecast. Read it as intent.

Timing reports differ. The Korea Herald reports Su saying MI455 shipments have begun. Seoul Economic Daily says Helios volume shipping starts in Q4. TrendForce, citing Economic Daily News, says MI455 production starts in the first half of 2027. Either way, the bigger volumes Su pointed to are in 2027.

What would change the view

  • AMD puts a number on 2027 supply, or on how much HBM4 it has locked in.
  • Samsung or SK hynix names AMD in a new long-term memory contract.
  • A signed Samsung foundry deal for AMD chips.
  • AMD's next quarterly report shows purchase commitments to suppliers rising sharply.

What to watch

  • Samsung's preliminary third-quarter results, due 8 October, for what memory is earning.
  • AMD's next quarterly report, for supply commitments and Helios shipments.
  • TSMC's plans for more advanced wafer and CoWoS capacity.
  • Any sign customers are cutting memory per system, which Su hinted at.
