NiSource closed at $42.68 on 16 October, about $20.47 billion for the shares. The same day it signed Microsoft into a 20-year energy agreement that adds about 1,100 MW to a shared generation pool from 2028. The only plant printed is a 600 MW battery whose toll is not effective until 31 January 2027. What is the price already assuming about getting paid on a signed pool while named generation still waits?
In short
- The question: what is NiSource's price already assuming about the named-plant stuck step — a 1,100 MW Microsoft add that is a pool print, not a turbine list?
- The answer: Scenario B. About $20.47 billion is about 22.7 times trailing earnings and about 19.5 times as the tape prints the forward multiple (ours). The price is not paying for Microsoft's megawatts to be named this quarter. It is paying for a regulated book that already collects, and for a GenCo pool that Microsoft has agreed to fund, while the pad stays empty
- Why: the 16 October release adds about 1,100 MW from 2028; Microsoft funds generation and transmission. The 16 October 8-K names one plant: 600 MW / 2,400 MWh, expected $2.2 billion of storage payments over about 20.5 years, dead unless an EPC contract and a MISO interconnection are signed by 31 January 2027. Today's US Pulse mapped who gets paid on that paper. This morning's Wire is a hall loan with no named tenant. This piece is the utility's price
- The size of the gap: 600 ÷ 1,100 = 54.5% named if the battery even counts, which NiSource has not said (ours). The $2.2 billion toll is 10.7% of the equity value; the $7.6 billion data-centre sleeve is 37.1% of the same price (ours)
- What would break it: the 31 January papers dying with no plant list on 28 October (A); or a Schahfer-style site list that turns 1,100 MW into named turbines (C)
- Nothing here is a recommendation. This is a map of what the price requires, with the working shown

Why does NiSource sit at the named-plant stuck step?
NiSource is a regulated gas-and-electric utility. It gets paid when a rate base is used and when a large-load contract funds the kit that serves it. It does not get paid because a megawatt was announced. Speed-to-power is the free map of that long clock. Today's US Pulse already mapped who gets paid on the 16 October paper. This piece tests the price.
Demand is not the bind: Microsoft is named and funds generation and transmission. The wires already collect: trailing sales $6.88 billion, trailing operating cash $2.30 billion. The plan is funded on paper: $28.6 billion of 2026–30 capex, $7.6 billion of it data-centre, and $2.02–$2.07 of 2026 adjusted EPS, all reaffirmed on 5 August. What is left is a named watt.
Amazon's IURC Cause 46362 listed sites: two 1,300 MW combined-cycle plants at Schahfer and a 400 MW battery at Mitchell. Microsoft's papers list a pool add and one four-hour battery that is not yet a contract. Do not read 1,100 MW as a plant that exists. This is not the 16 October map on unnamed dedicated power above 250 MW — that was Meta's Kentucky campus against a tariff line. It is not Goodman's power bank. Today is one listed utility and one empty pad.
What does ~$20.5 billion already assume?
Three answers compete:
- The pad stays empty. 31 January comes and goes with no EPC and no interconnection. The 28 October call repeats pool language. 2028 service slips. The $7.6 billion data-centre sleeve is optionality that does not convert. The price was paying for named generation that does not arrive
- The pool is the product. Microsoft funds the kit. The battery conditions clear. The unnamed remainder is GenCo's job and Microsoft's cheque. NiSource is paid on the regulated book and on a contract that does not need a turbine list this quarter. Named plants wait. The empty pad is the layer's bind, not a miss in the multiple
- The pad is named. The call prints a Schahfer-style site list. An IURC special contract follows. 31 January clears. The 1,100 MW becomes a plant print. The bind eases
A tip sheet would pick a side. Analysis asks which answer Friday's close already needs.
Our read, in one line: the price already assumes Scenario B. About $20.47 billion is 22.7 times trailing earnings and about 3.0 times trailing sales (ours). The forward multiple of 19.53 times needs about $2.19 of earnings per share, 6.8% above the $2.045 midpoint of the 2026 guide (ours). That is a claim on a utility that still bills, and on a pool Microsoft has agreed to fund — not on a turbine appearing before the 28 October call. The scenarios and the arithmetic are below.
