If Cash Books the Finish Before the Line Is Live, Where Does Cash Stick?
NVIDIA numbered $1.1bn for KYEC test and $1.3bn for Amkor Korea. The seats those dollars buy are dated 2027 and 2028. Who is paid if cash books the finish before the line is live.

On 21 October 2026, at GTC Berlin, NVIDIA numbered the cash it is sending to book the finish — the substrate, the interposer, the tester and the optical engine — before those lines are live. A $1.1 billion capacity-reservation advance to King Yuan Electronics for US test, high-volume targeted April 2027. A same-day Amkor $1.3 billion Korea agreement that takes Arizona-plus-Korea to $3 billion. The plants still have to be built. This map asks who is paid if cash books that finish before the line is live.
In short
- The question: if cash books packaging, test and optics before the line is live, where does the cash stick?
- The answer: Scenario B. The live line, not the booking, is the stuck step. Tool vendors, contractors, Amkor, KYEC and the substrate houses get paid on the advance. NVIDIA has already left $2.4 billion of numbered dollars this week (ours: $1.1bn + $1.3bn). The seats those dollars buy are dated 2027 and 2028. Downstream hours wait on those seats
- Why: today's Wire gave the cheques. Today's Korea Pulse shows $27.516 billion of chips leaving in October 1–20; daily chips $2.12 billion versus September $2.81 billion (ours). Today's Stack shows Lightning already paid for 36,000+ owned GPUs. Those hours still need a finished package. This map is the booked finish, not a stock
- The size of the gate: $2.4 billion ÷ $279 billion = 0.86% of NVIDIA's 26 July supply-and-capacity book (ours). The last-quarter jump was $160 billion. Tuesday's numbered dollars are 1.5% of that jump (ours) — small on the commitment line, a year of cash for the houses that receive them. The percentages on the lines are targets, not installed wafers
- What would break it: a dated high-volume start that actually lands (A), or a 10-Q that cuts the $279 billion book because the agreements were still cancelable before firm orders (C)
- Nothing here is a recommendation. Arithmetic shown below the wall
The numbers that matter
| What | Figure | Date | What it tells us |
|---|---|---|---|
| KYEC US test advance | $1.1 billion; HVM targeted April 2027 | NVIDIA, 21 Oct 2026 | Cash now; seats later |
| Amkor Korea | $1.3 billion; Arizona + Korea $3 billion | Amkor, 21 Oct | The other numbered cheque |
| Amkor US (July) | $1.5 billion prepayment, Arizona | Amkor, 23 Jul 2026 | Already inside the $3bn total |
| Numbered advances this week | $2.4 billion | Ours | $1.1bn + $1.3bn |
| NVIDIA supply-and-capacity book | $279 billion, from $119 billion | 10-Q, 26 Jul 2026 | Some cancelable before firm orders |
| Share of that book | 0.86% | Ours | 2.4 ÷ 279 |
| Substrate capacity (NVIDIA products) | 2.5× over three years | NVIDIA, 21 Oct | IBIDEN, SEMCO, Unimicron |
| SEMCO ABF | Dedicated Sejong and Busan; deliveries from 2026 | SEMCO, 21 Oct | No NVIDIA dollar print |
| Amkor interposer wafers, Korea | >300% by end-2028 | NVIDIA, 21 Oct | Ours: 4× today's wafers |
| SPIL optical engines | 15× mid-2027, then another doubling by end-2028 | NVIDIA, 21 Oct | Ours if stacked: 30×; base undisclosed |
| Korea chips, Oct 1–20 | $27.516 billion; daily $2.12bn vs Sep $2.81bn | Customs, 21 Oct | Boxes leaving; new boards not in this receipt |
| Lightning owned fleet | 36,000+ GPUs; ARR over $500 million | 21 Jan / About 22 Oct | Hours still bind |

Why is the booked finish the stuck step?
An AI accelerator does not leave as a bare die. The logic wafer comes off a foundry line. HBM sits beside it. Both sit on a silicon interposer. That sandwich sits on an IC substrate — the board that carries the package to the server. A tester signs the module off. Co-packaged optics put the optical engine on the same clock as the board. NVIDIA is paying at those four finish steps at once, and it is paying before the seats exist.
That is a different question from 8 October, when substrates staying short into 2028 mapped a shortage without this week's numbered advances. It is not ASE's packaging-price piece, not CoWoS-L through 2028, and not tools and halls paid before the slot. It is the inverse of signed leases waiting on handover: there the hall is signed and cash waits; here cash has already left and the line waits. IC substrates and ABF is the free page for the board. Today's Wire gave the $1.1 billion and the $3 billion. This map asks: when the booking is not the scarce object, who is paid while the live line is?
Three clocks around it are not the bind. The memory invoice is already clearing: Korea Customs printed $27.516 billion of chips in thirteen working days. The owned GPU is already paid for at Lightning: 36,000+ cards; hours still that desk's stuck step. The foundry wafer is not what Tuesday numbered. What is left is a reserved finish — and behind it a $279 billion book the same 10-Q says may still be cancelable before firm orders. The percentages are aims, dated 2026 through end-2028. IBIDEN's advance was signed earlier this year; Tuesday restates it. SEMCO's "significant portion" of 2028 output is not a share. Unimicron's dollar figure, KYEC's US city and SPIL's optical-engine base are undisclosed. We map the numbered cash and the dated seats, not a plant that has not started.
What does the map already assume?
Three answers compete: the 2027 clocks hold and the booked seats become live packages (A); cash sticks with the houses that received the advance while the line is still the bind through 2028 (B); or the 10-Q book is unwound before firm orders, and Tuesday's dollars come back (C). A tip sheet would pick NVIDIA or Amkor. Analysis asks which answer Tuesday's numbered cheques already need.
Our read, in one line: the map already assumes Scenario B. $2.4 billion is 0.86% of $279 billion (ours). The seats are dated April 2027, Q2 2027, Q1 2028, end-2028. Korea is still paid on boxes that left. Lightning is still paid when an hour bills. Neither invoice turns an empty tester into a live one. This is the inverse of halls signed before customers: here the scarce object is the live finish, not the signed hall. A tip sheet would price NVIDIA. This desk prices the appointment. The scenarios and the arithmetic are below.
